CareJournal
A stylised view of the CareJournal progress dashboard
For SEND schools and specialist settings

Every small step, clearly recorded.

CareJournal is a British progress journal for SEND schools. Staff capture meaningful observations from a phone. Leaders see progress across the school. Families can be included carefully when the time is right.

What it is

A learning journal built for SEND, not adapted from early years.

Many progress journals were designed for early-years settings, where children are often assessed against shared developmental bands. SEND provision is different.

Each child may follow a bespoke pathway across communication, self-care, emotional regulation, independence and life skills.

CareJournal is built around that reality: quick observations from staff, clear oversight for leaders, and one careful record of progress over time.

What you actually use

One platform. Two simple surfaces.

A phone app for staff in the room. A web dashboard for school leaders. Both working from the same record, shaped around your school’s own pathways.

On a phone, in the room

Record the moment while it is still fresh.

Choose a child. Select a target from your school’s learning tree. Add a few words of context, the level of support given, and a photo or short video if needed. The observation is saved in the right place, without paperwork building up at the end of the day.

On the web, across the term

Months of observations. One clearer picture.

Every observation contributes to a wider view of progress across pupils, classes, learning areas and time periods. Leaders can see where evidence is strong, where attention may be needed, and which children or pathways are worth reviewing more closely.

Who it's for

Three audiences. One shared record.

For schools and senior leaders

The whole school, in one view.

A classroom visit shows a moment. CareJournal helps leaders see the pattern across a week, a term or the whole school.

Review observations by pupil, class, learning area or pathway. See where evidence is building, where gaps are appearing, and where support may need a closer look.

Your school keeps its own language, targets and pedagogy. CareJournal adapts around your provision, not the other way round.

For practitioners and support staff

Record what you notice, without leaving the room.

Staff can log meaningful moments quickly from a phone: what the child did, the context around it, and the support they needed.

They see the children assigned to them and can return to their own observations when they need to add detail or make a correction.

The tool stays quiet, simple and close to the work.

Family access · planned for Phase 2

Their child’s day, shared with care.

Family access will give parents and carers a private view of selected moments from their own child's school day.

No feed. No algorithm. No comparison with other children.

Just the moments that matter, shared carefully by the people who know them best.

Built around small steps, all worth noticing.

In SEND, progress does not always arrive as a neat milestone. Sometimes it is a glance, a sound, a choice, a gesture, a calmer transition, or one more step towards independence.

CareJournal exists to help those moments be noticed, recorded and remembered.

A child’s progress is more than data. It is a story built from the moments people notice.

Our design principle

Restrained.

No social feed. No unnecessary notifications. No engagement tricks. CareJournal is designed to stay in the background, so staff can stay present with children.

Careful.

Role-based access, audit trails, encrypted data and clear permission boundaries help schools manage sensitive pupil information responsibly.

British.

Built for UK SEND settings, written in plain English, and designed around the responsibilities schools already carry.
